What a day to remember! Yesterday, we embarked on a memorable wine tour through Stellenbosch with a delightful guest from Idaho, whose passion for wine was infectious. Her favorites—sparkling rosé and bold Malbec—set the stage for an adventure filled with stunning views, delicious flavors, and culinary delights.
As we meandered through Stellenbosch’s breathtaking landscapes, it was evident that this journey would be about more than just tasting. We aimed to create lasting memories in one of the world's premier wine regions.
A Toast to the First Producer of MCC: Simonsig
Our first stop, Simonsig, is celebrated as the birthplace of Methode Cap Classique (MCC) in South Africa. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a landscape of rolling vineyards, which provided the perfect setting for our wine tasting.

My guest was thrilled to taste Simonsig's MCC rosé, renowned for its delicate bubbles and refreshing notes. As we raised our glasses, the vibrant flavors danced on our tongues, and her enthusiasm was palpable. She even decided to purchase a case, including several bottles of the MCC rosé, highlighting its appeal.
The conversation flowed seamlessly as we discussed the wine's tasting notes and the fascinating history of MCC, which dates back to 1971. Simonsig set the perfect tone for our day, combining superb wine with unforgettable views.
Bold Flavors at Rustenberg
Next, we ventured to Rustenberg, located at the foot of the Simonsberg mountain. This estate is famous for its robust reds, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon that boasts a rich flavor profile.
As we tasted Rustenberg’s Cabernet Sauvignon, my guest was captivated by its layers of dark fruit, hints of spice, and a smooth velvety finish, leaving her wanting more. This wine has received accolades including a score of 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, reinforcing its quality. Each sip complemented the breathtaking mountain scenery around us.
We also sampled a blend that highlighted the unique terroir of Stellenbosch, further enriching her experience. Rustenberg resonated with her expectations and forged a deeper connection between wine and landscape.

Scenic Relaxation at Bartinney
After an exciting tasting at Rustenberg, we traveled to Bartinney, nestled in the picturesque Banhoek Valley. Known for its delightful food and wine pairings, this charming venue offered a picturesque backdrop perfect for relaxing.
We indulged in a beautifully arranged charcuterie board, expertly paired with their wines. As we savored the flavors of curated meats and artisanal cheeses, my guest shared stories from Idaho, creating an intimate atmosphere that made the moment even more special.
The stunning views of the valley enhanced the experience, prompting discussions about the differences in climate and terroir between South Africa and Idaho. We reflected on how each region shapes its wines, fostering a deeper appreciation for the craft.
Our time at Bartinney felt like the ultimate haven for wine lovers, where every sip celebrated the day’s adventures.
Sweet Endings at Hidden Valley
For our final stop, we made our way to Hidden Valley, a winery renowned for both its breathtaking vistas and innovative pairings. My guest was particularly excited about a unique wine and chocolate pairing, which seemed like a delightful way to wrap up our adventure.
At Hidden Valley, we indulged in a selection of wines that complemented various chocolates. The experience showcased how flavors could harmonize beautifully. For instance, their crisp white wine paired excellently with dark chocolate, enhancing the fruity undertones.

The fusion of sweet and savory turned our tasting into a sensory event. My guest, who enjoys sweet white wines, found this pairing particularly delightful, affirming her tastes and providing a perfect end to our day.
Reflecting on an Enriching Experience
Looking back at our unforgettable wine adventure in Stellenbosch, it’s clear that the combination of stunning views, remarkable wines, and cherished company crafted a perfect day. From sipping the bubbly MCC rosé at Simonsig to indulging in the gourmet lunch at Bartinney, each moment was filled with joy and exploration.
