Cape Town Private Wine Tour: Red Wine, Boutique Estates and Beautiful Views

A private Cape Winelands wine tour is at its best when the day is built around the person experiencing it. On this particular tour, my guest from Mexico had a clear preference: she loved red wine and wanted to experience beautiful wineries and some of the smaller, more personal estates of the Cape Winelands.

So rather than following a fixed itinerary, we designed the day around exactly that.

Starting Our Wine Tour in Franschhoek

Our first stop was Dieu Donné in Franschhoek, where the elevated location provides spectacular views across the valley and surrounding mountains.

It was a beautiful place to start the day, enjoying the scenery and some South African wine before continuing our private wine tour towards Stellenbosch.

A Boutique Wine Experience at Mitre’s Edge

Next we visited Mitre’s Edge, a small boutique winery where we enjoyed a personal tasting of five red wines with the winemaker.

The wines were accompanied by a selection of cheeses, and the intimate atmosphere made this a particularly memorable stop. Experiences like this are one of the reasons I enjoy including smaller wineries on my private Stellenbosch wine tours. You get the opportunity to slow down, talk about the wines and enjoy a much more personal experience.

And, of course, we also had some company from the resident dog.

Lunch Among the Stellenbosch Mountains

From Mitre’s Edge we continued to Bartinney in Stellenbosch for lunch.

With vineyards and mountains surrounding us, we enjoyed a charcuterie board and took some time simply to appreciate the setting. A Cape Winelands wine tour doesn’t need to be about rushing through as many tastings as possible. Part of the experience is having time to enjoy the food, scenery and atmosphere that make this region so special.

Ending the Day at Dornier

Our final stop was Dornier, another beautiful Stellenbosch wine estate.

We finished the afternoon with more red wine and a bacon and brie flammkuchen — a relaxed ending to a full day exploring Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

Why Choose a Cape Town Private Wine Tour?

There is no single perfect itinerary for exploring the Cape Winelands.

Some guests want to visit famous estates, while others prefer small boutique wineries. Some are passionate about particular wines, while others simply want good wine, beautiful scenery and a relaxed day away from Cape Town.

That is the advantage of booking a private Cape Winelands wine tour from Cape Town. The itinerary can be tailored around the wines, wineries and experiences that genuinely interest you.

If you’re visiting Cape Town and would like to explore Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and the surrounding wine regions on your own private tour, get in touch and we can build the day around you.
