Beyond Cape Town: Exploring the Garden Route and Klein Karoo

South Africa’s Western Cape has so much more to offer beyond Cape Town. From the spectacular coastline of the Garden Route to the peaceful, wide-open landscapes of the Klein Karoo, these two regions offer completely different yet equally unforgettable experiences.

A recent journey gave me the opportunity to explore both, discovering beautiful coastal towns, remarkable scenery, boutique wineries and some of the region’s quieter hidden treasures.

Wilderness and Knysna: The Beauty of the Garden Route

Our Garden Route adventure included a visit to Wilderness, a charming coastal village known for its magnificent beaches, lush surroundings and relaxed atmosphere.

One of the highlights was lunch at Salinas, a beachfront restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean. With fresh seafood, spectacular ocean views and the sound of the waves, it was the perfect introduction to the Garden Route.

From Wilderness, we continued to Knysna, where the famous Knysna Heads offer some of the most breathtaking views along South Africa’s coastline.

Towering cliffs frame the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon, with turquoise waters and distant mountains creating an extraordinary panorama.

We also visited the Knysna Waterfront, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of this picturesque coastal town.

The Klein Karoo: Where Time Slows Down

Leaving the coast behind, my journey continued inland towards Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo.

The contrast was remarkable. The lush coastal landscapes gave way to rugged mountains, indigenous vegetation and seemingly endless open spaces.

I spent a night at a secluded farm cottage surrounded by the natural beauty of the Klein Karoo.

With zebras roaming nearby, a traditional South African braai overlooking the mountains and an incredible night sky, the experience captured everything that makes this region so special.

Away from the crowds and noise of the city, the Klein Karoo offers something increasingly rare: genuine peace and tranquillity.

Calitzdorp: A Hidden Gem for Wine Lovers

The following day took me to Calitzdorp, a small town renowned for its exceptional fortified and dessert-style wines.

At De Krans Wines, I enjoyed a tasting showcasing the region’s distinctive wine heritage.

Another highlight was Peter Bayly Wines, a boutique winery set against beautiful mountain scenery, where the personal atmosphere and conversation with the owner made the visit particularly memorable.

Unlike the busier Cape Winelands, Calitzdorp offers a more intimate and unhurried experience, making it a wonderful destination for travellers who enjoy discovering lesser-known wine regions.

Route 62: The Journey Is Part of the Experience

The return journey to Cape Town followed the scenic Route 62, winding through mountain passes, picturesque valleys and charming country towns.

With spectacular landscapes around every corner, Route 62 is much more than a road connecting destinations. It is an experience in itself.
