Stellenbosch, with its sprawling vineyards and stunning landscapes, is the perfect place for a family getaway. Recently, I had the pleasure of guiding a delightful family from Dallas, Texas, on a wine tour that catered to both adults and their 11-year-old son. This trip was packed with delightful experiences, from interacting with friendly donkeys to savoring exquisite wines. Our day was not just enjoyable for the adults; it was also filled with activities that kept the young boy engaged and entertained.
Planning this family-friendly wine tour was both a challenge and a joy. We created an itinerary that offered a harmonious mix of wine tasting and kid-friendly activities, allowing everyone to have a fantastic time.
Starting at Babylonstoren
We kicked off our adventure at the enchanting Babylonstoren, known for both its high-quality wines and family-friendly atmosphere.

As soon as we arrived, the young boy was thrilled to feed the friendly donkeys roaming around the estate. His joy was contagious as he laughed and played with these gentle animals. After our interaction with the donkeys, we treated ourselves to delicious ice cream, a refreshing choice on a warm Saturday afternoon. Did you know that Babylonstoren offers over 300 varieties of fruits and vegetables? It adds to the rich experience of indulging in fresh, locally-sourced flavors.
Next, we enjoyed a wine tasting session that featured a sumptuous charcuterie board filled with locally-produced cheeses, cured meats, and artisan breads. While the adults savored the rich wines, the young boy took the opportunity to explore the beautiful garden. The botanical gardens—home to over 700 plant species—offered a serene setting for family moments, where laughter echoed amid vibrant flowers and meticulously designed pathways.
MCC Tasting at Bartinney
As it happened to be the mother’s birthday, we headed to Bartinney for a memorable Method Cap Classique (MCC) tasting.

The views from Bartinney were breathtaking, with rolling hills and expansive vineyards as the backdrop for our celebratory toast. The lady of the family shared her love for sparkling wines. It was great to cater to her tastes on her special day. Research shows that MCC can be enjoyed by a wide audience, as it often has a fruit-forward flavor profile and a refreshing finish, appealing even to those new to wine.
While they enjoyed the MCC, the family reminisced about their travels. It was heartwarming to see their joyful interactions and hear stories about their favorite destinations. This connection added a personal touch, making their day more memorable.
Lunch at The Fat Butcher
After the tasting, we were ready to enjoy some local cuisine. The family's request for a meat-based lunch led us to The Fat Butcher, famed for its incredible dishes made from fresh, local ingredients.
The restaurant’s aroma of grilled meats heightened our anticipation. We savored a variety of hearty dishes, including succulent steaks and flavorful sides. The relaxed atmosphere allowed us to share laughter and stories. One highlight was when the young boy discovered a new favorite side dish—truffle fries—which he couldn't get enough of!
Wine and Chocolate Pairing at Waterford
To wrap up our wine tour, we made a reservation for a delightful wine and chocolate pairing at Waterford Estate. This was a sweet way to end our adventure!

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with friendly smiles and a beautifully arranged setup, which raised our anticipation for the tasting. The pairing of rich wines with exquisite chocolates created a delightful experience—not only for the adults but for the young boy as well. Observing their reactions throughout the tasting was a joy; surprise and pure delight lit up their faces as they discovered how the flavors melded beautifully. This experience was a fitting conclusion that kept the excitement alive until the very end.
Reflecting on a Memorable Journey
Our family-friendly wine adventure in Stellenbosch was truly spectacular. From donkey interactions at Babylonstoren to the indulgent chocolate pairings at Waterford, each stop provided unique experiences that bridged age gaps and brought the family closer together. Witnessing their shared moments against the breathtaking backdrop of Stellenbosch reminded me of the magic inherent in travel, especially when combined with local culture.
A heartfelt thank you to my lovely guests for an unforgettable day! If you're a family in search of fun ways to explore or simply looking for new adventures, Stellenbosch has something to offer everyone. Here’s to more incredible moments ahead!
